Just like humans, dogs can develop arthritis and joint pain. Gout is characterized by painful swelling and stiffness in one or more joints and is caused by a chronic inflammatory condition. Does your dog suffer from arthritis pain, swelling, or stiff joints? Read here.

Arthritis & green-lipped mussel

A diagnosis of arthritis is naturally made by the veterinarian, who may also choose to offer medication for relief, but in fact, there are several things we as dog owners can do to help our dog.

Physical activity, normal weight, and good fitness are important for the well-being of all dogs, especially for those affected by arthritis. Arthritis cannot be rested away, but one should naturally ensure that the activity is adjusted to the dog's capabilities. At the same time, it can be a good idea to warm up before a walk, so the dog's muscles are not cold and stiff. (read more (about heating) in another article).

Physiotherapy and laser treatment can also alleviate the dog's pain and are offered, among other things, by therapeutic canine physiotherapists.

Green-lipped mussel extract (GLM)

The green-lipped mussel originates from New Zealand, which is why it is also known as the New Zealand mussel. Back in the 1970s, it was observed that there were benefits to the consumption of green-lipped mussels. Studies showed that the Māori living near the coast had far fewer joint problems than the other Māori who lived further inland.

Subsequent studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory properties of the green-lipped mussel can also have a positive impact on joint issues in dogs, and that it is particularly effective in alleviating pain, swelling, and stiffness in dogs affected by arthritis, while also helping to support the normal function of joint cartilage, joint capsules, tendons, and ligaments. The green-lipped mussel has also been shown to alleviate some of the side effects and issues that can arise from arthritis medication.

Green-lipped mussels are rich in minerals, essential amino acids, glycoproteins, as well as anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and chondroitin sulfate. In addition to amino acids and fatty acids, green-lipped mussels are also a good source of zinc, iron, selenium, manganese, and B vitamins. They are also a good, natural source of pro- and prebiotics, which are beneficial for digestion.

The dosage of GLM extract will depend on the quality of the product and the size of your dog, but it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions. It can take up to 3 months before an effect of GLM is seen.
GLM is available in tablets, capsules, or powder.

Dogs known to have shellfish allergies should not consume green-lipped mussels.
